Bell Island_Day 07
On our very last morning of the build, we finished up by placing finishing touches on the gabion baskets, securing the wood decking, and documenting our work.
We lingered for quite a while; not quite wanting to pull ourselves away from this beautiful landscape and a project we were all very proud to be involved with. Luckily, we didn’t have to leave the island just yet. Kevin and Val (who helps run the kitchen at the Grand Wabana Inn) graciously volunteered to drive us around to see more of what the island has to offer. We visited the head of the No. 4 mine, Grebe’s Nest, and the site of the Scotia Pier. Later that day, we grabbed the ferry across the Tickle and headed to St. John’s for a great seafood feast courtesy of Sarah’s family.
This has been an immensely transformative experience for all of us and we are truly grateful to everyone involved – from the Bell Island community, to the museum, to ERA, and to the Culture of Outports programme. We are blessed to have been part of this and are looking forward to seeing where we take this positive energy in the future.
